EnCana's Severn Compressor Plant, a mile west and generally up wind from our home grew in 10 years from just "2 compressor engines" into a huge processing facility that made us feel as if our health was in jeopardy by living in such close proximity. Eighteen years previous when the first brown envelope arrived in the mail, Mom and Dad didn't put too much thought into a couple of small compressor engines over on the neighbour's land. Like the first gas well the thought was... "What's one well?"
If we knew then what we know now we would have done things differently. Looking back I realize we made many mistakes as we learned how EnCana really operates.

Two years later, another brown envelope...
In 2002 EnCana moved into the neighbourhood and we watched their 'pattern of dealings' develop. This included more frequent deliveries of brown, information filled envelopes.

Empty corporate promises about the flaring and oilfield traffic were just the start of many unfulfilled commitments made by EnCana. And with it came a lot of lying too.
In ten years this "two engine" compressor plant that we barely noticed grew into a facility we learned after the fact, was not safe to live downwind from. In 2006 I began documenting these supposedly "infrequent" flaring events. This was one of my regular travel routes and the photographs were taken as I just happened to be driving by or, when we could clearly see their dirty flare from our yard. Keep in mind that this is just one compressor plant and one flare out of dozens that would spring up and surround us, all within a few years.
